James Dean, Jean Leon and wines in Barcelona

Share:

When I was a teenager, I was a fan of James Dean. So, when I visited a Jean Leon’s winery some time ago, I was astonished when I found out that the winery owner was a friend of James Dean's. He was about to open a restaurant with him in the fifties. Unfortunately, these business plans disappeared with Dean’s sudden death in a car crash. Jean Leon’s winery is in the Penedès region, 45’ south of Barcelona.

The name of the winery sounds French, but do not be fooled by the name, its owner was a Spanish man born in Santander, Spain. His real name was Ceferino Carrión Madrazo. Ceferino’s history is awesome. At only 19 years of age, he left for the United States. He arrived in NY with no money on his pockets, but, after some time, he went to Hollywood. He was an aspiring actor, and while he was waiting for his chance to thrive, he worked as a waiter in Villa Capri (Frank Sinatra’s restaurant). He met actors such as Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, amongst others. In 1957, he opened La Scala, a wonderful restaurant where the stars would go to enjoy a meal without being disturbed.

The guide, Mr Kölling, showed us the winery and gave details about Ceferino’s life. After the fascinating history, came the wine tasting. He explained to us the features that made these wines unique while we sipped and absorbed the different aromas and flavors. We are not Hollywood stars, and we don't work in the White House, but we can savour the wines he created. Here, you can read about Jean Leon’s life. I strongly recommend visiting wineries in Barcelona. I find Jean Leon’s winery especially appealing for his owner’s history. Feel free to recommend me wineries you like, either by commenting here or by sending an email to martaplayita gmail com. Thank you! Have a great summer!
